If you find Pete Namlook’s discography much too daunting to dive into, this is the place to start. It is one of the most evocative displays of ambient music ever recorded, and arguably Namlook's solo masterpiece. Air I (You) is a set of gusty ambience with the appropriately titled tracks "Wind" and "Breeze," plus a series of impressionistic female French vocal samples placed over lazy, brooding space music. The first volume of the Air series easily veers from a beat-less beginning and lots of queasy life support loops to a techno-tinged race against time and a euphoric climax (“Lost in Passion”) that cobbles together samples from the rest of the record. A must have in every serious ambient collection.

Hödeshof, ein kleiner Weiler auf den Hunsrückhöhen, nur wenige hundert Meter oberhalb von Trarbach und dem Moseltal gelegen. Ein kleines Idyll, umgeben von Feldern, Wiesen und Wäldern und Heimat einer Hand voll Menschen und ebensoweniger Pferde. Für 15 Jahre war dieser Ort die Wohn- und Werkstätte von Peter Kuhlmann, in der Musikwelt besser unter dem Pseudonym Pete Namlook bekannt. Bis zu dem Tag, als dieser, im November 2012, kurz vor seinem 52. Geburtstag, viel zu früh an einem Herzinfarkt verstarb. Hödeshof ist nicht gerade die Örtlichkeit, welche man als Wirkungsstätte eines renommierten Produzenten der Ambient- und Elektroszene vermuten würde, doch für Kuhlmann war dieses Gehöft inmitten der Natur wohl ein idealer Rückzugsort, um dem Großstadttrubel zu entfliehen. Denn für den gebürtigen Frankfurter war die Natur selbst schon immer die größte Inspirationsquelle für seine Musik gewesen.
Dies wird schon auf Namlooks erster Solo-Aufnahme deutlich, die bereits 1993, damals noch in seiner alten Wirkungsstätte und Heimatstadt, entstanden ist. Denn “Air • (You)”, das erste von fünf Alben, das unter dem Namen Air entstanden ist, kann als Art Neuerfindung der Ambient-Musik bezeichnet werden. Denn Pete Namlook, der zuvor hauptsächlich als Produzent tanzbarer elektronischer Musik tätig gewesen war, machte den ambienten Chill Out mit “Air • (You)” zum ersten mal fei von in der Szene ungeschriebenen Gesetzen. Und so fanden nicht nur Jazz, Ethno, Neo Klassik und Lounge-Musik Einzug auf diese Platte, sondern vor allem auch der Klang der uns umgebenden Natur. Dem Thema der Liebe gewidmet und an ausgesuchten Stellen mit lieblichem französischsprachigem Gesang versehen, ist “Air • (You)” ein Album, welches man förmlich spüren kann. Denn ob es der Wind ist, den man vermeintlich auf seiner Haut verspürt oder die Liebe, die Tief in das Herz eindringt. “Air • (You)” nimmt man nicht nur mit den Ohren wahr.
Ein moderner Klassiker, der, genau wie sein Erschaffer, noch immer viel zu wenig bekannt ist. Schön, dass es endlich ein Reissue dieses bisher nur schwer erhältlichen Albums gibt. Diese kommt zwar ohne irgendwelche Schnörkel oder Extras daher, doch war dies auch nicht nötig, bei einem Musiker mit solch reichhaltigem Backkatalog. Denn “Air • (You)” ist gemacht für die Ewigkeit. Und vielleicht verhilft diese Vinyl-Neuauflage Peter Kuhlmann posthum endlich zu der breiten Anerkennung, die er verdient hätte.

James Bernard confuses time. These suite of tracks play tricks with you, everytime you listen to 'em. Some times fast, sometimes slow, sometimes scary, sometimes mellow.
